Enjoy the Season, The Healthy Way!

Stay Active, Sleep Well & Avoid Festive Burnout

The holiday season is filled with joy, family, and festivities; however, increased commitments, stress, and exhaustion lead to festive burnout before the main event. Significant pressures in all areas of our lives, including work, family, and finances, cannot be avoided. Having so much on our plates, it’s easy to neglect ourselves. Prioritising your health helps you enjoy every moment without wearing out.

Naturally, with over 25 years of experience as leaders in workplace wellbeing, we have the tips to help you maintain your mental and physical energy while still being productive and getting it ALL done.

Why does it matter?

  • Boost Energy: Staying active and eating well helps keep your energy levels high for celebrations.
  • Reduce Stress: Sleep and movement help manage holiday stress.
  • Support Immunity: A balanced lifestyle improves your immune system while busy.
Tips for surviving the festive period and avoiding festive burnout

Set Realistic Goals

Sticking to your usual lifestyle goals during the busy festive season can feel overwhelming. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on small, achievable steps. For example, the Heart Foundation recommends 30 minutes of daily activity. However, if that feels challenging, aim for 10–15 minutes each day or 30 minutes every second day. These small changes will still have a positive effect. Remember, every bit counts—celebrate progress, not perfection!

Avoid Alcohol

While it might seem like a drink helps relieve stress, alcohol only offers temporary relief and can make you feel worse later. During the festive season, with more social events, drinking—especially more than usual—can lead to poor sleep, dehydration, and increased anxiety. These effects often leave you feeling exhausted and less able to enjoy the celebrations. By limiting alcohol, you can stay energised, clear-headed, and ready for the holiday fun.

Financial Stress

To navigate financial stress, start by having open conversations about alternatives to buying gifts. Instead of putting undue pressure on everyone, consider simple changes. For example, limit gifts to children only, or set up a budget-friendly Secret Santa. Additionally, find creative ways to distribute the gifts – turn the giving into a fun game or shared experience rather than focusing on the item itself.

Maintaining balance is the key! Keep expectations in perspective, relax, and enjoy the time.
