Building a Culture of Wellbeing on the Noble Deliverer

The Noble Deliverer (formerly the Maersk Deliverer) is a semi-submersible offshore oil rig which operated in the Ichthys field north of Broome, WA. With the capacity to house up to 180 crew members, life on board can be a demanding and isolated environment – building a culture of wellbeing and health a critical focus.

Since early 2021, WFR has partnered with the crew to deliver a range of health, fitness, and injury prevention initiatives tailored to the unique challenges of offshore life.

Starting with Wellbeing

Delivering with a strong focus on holistic employee wellbeing. The programs included – health screens, wellness talks, group fitness sessions, personal training, and nutrition advice. One of our goals was to ensure every crew member, regardless of shift, had access to look after their physical and mental health.

Evolving to Meet the Crew’s Needs

As our relationship with the crew grew, so too did our services, introducing a suite of injury prevention tools. These comprised of seated massage therapy, rehabilitation bands, foam rollers, and upgraded strength and conditioning equipment. These benefits were specifically designed to address the repetitive, high-impact nature of offshore work and, as a result, provide long-term physical support.

With up to five group fitness classes running each day, our team carefully structured the program timed to fit around the crew’s rotating shifts. Sessions rotated between mobility-focused yoga/stretching and high-energy strength and conditioning, offering something for everyone – whether they needed to unwind or get moving.

Creating Connection Through Wellbeing Challenges

To build motivation and team spirit, we introduced a calendar of health and fitness challenges. Two highlights included:

  • Rig Olympics – A fun, competitive series of challenges such as the longest plank, fastest 1km run, and most sit-ups in a minute. Winners received WFR prizes like cooler bags and water bottles.
  • 24-Hour Relay (Rig Run) – As part of a global offshore challenge, the Deliverer took part in a 24-hour fitness relay. The crew members each signed up for time slots across the full period. There were prizes drawn at random for participants – creating a great sense of camaraderie and shared purpose.

Positive Culture of Wellbeing – Long-Term Impact

It was fantastic to see how engaged the crew became – not just in the challenges, but in building a culture of wellbeing. Over time, health and injury prevention became part of daily life on board. Ultimately, this helped create a stronger, more connected team in an environment where that matters most.

In Their Own Words

The success of our programs is reflected in the feedback from those who live and work in these demanding environments every day. Here’s what the crew members had to say about the impact on board the Noble Deliverer.

“Honestly the only feedback I have is I wish it was more regular like you having a back to back because it boosted me to be more conscious of lifestyle changes I had to make and having motivation to keep fit with the training sessions (group classes) helped so much with having a bonus social aspect to keeping fit” – Bettina Rebelo (Catering)

“Your program helped me learn ways to train with the correct technique. Be accountable and be pushed. The app you prescribed us while you were away was a great idea. Vibes were awesome, it was fun, it wasn’t too serious. The balance was perfect when it needed to be” – Lee Hitches (Deck Pusher)

“I felt the program had huge benefits and provided some much needed support to the project” – Paul May (INPEX Company Man)
