Managing FIFO Fatigue to Enhance Safety and Wellbeing
Fatigue presents a significant challenge for FIFO workers, as highlighted by research from Edith Cowan University (ECU), emphasising how factors like irregular schedules and unhealthy habits actively contribute to this issue.
The study, which monitored the sleep patterns of 75 FIFO workers over a typical 2:1 rotation, revealed concerning statistics: early morning shifts and long hours resulted in significant sleep loss, with sleep duration being 77 minutes shorter following each night shift and 30 minutes shorter after day shifts. This cumulative sleep deficit poses serious risks, as fatigue can impair both physical and mental performance, increasing the likelihood of workplace injuries.
The research also found that 60% of participants were at risk of developing sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea and shift work disorder, which further exacerbate sleep loss and pose additional hazards to workers’ health.
