Proven Ways to Strengthen Workplace Mental Health

Four Ways WFR is Helping Create Mentally Healthy Workplaces

Workplace Mental Health continues to be one of the most important conversations happening in workplaces today. Across a range of industries, WFR has been supporting organisations to move beyond awareness and create practical, sustainable approaches to mental wellbeing.

Here are four recent examples.

1. Building Mental Health Awareness and Literacy

As part of Greatland’s proactive Mental Health Strategy, WFR delivered Mental Health Awareness Training to more than 400 employees between November 2025 and May 2026.

The program focused on:

  • Recognising the signs and symptoms of poor mental health
  • Reducing stigma in the workplace
  • Developing confidence to start supportive conversations
  • Understanding available support pathways and resources

The program received an overall workshop rating of 4.54 out of 5, with participants highlighting the engaging delivery, practical content, and real-world examples.

“Great workshop. It was very interactive, interesting and engaging.”

To support ongoing education, WFR has also developed a Mental Health Awareness E-Learning Module that can be incorporated into onboarding programs, ensuring new employees and leaders receive consistent mental health education from day one.

2. Strengthening Leadership Capability

Leaders play a critical role in workplace mental health outcomes; in fact, research consistently shows that supportive leadership is one of the strongest protective factors for employee wellbeing.

For this reason, WFR delivered Mental Health for Leaders Training to 45 supervisors and managers at Greatland to strengthen leadership capability.

The training helped leaders develop practical skills to:

  • Identify concerns early
  • Recognise changes in employee behaviour
  • Navigate difficult conversations confidently
  • Connect employees with appropriate support services
  • Foster psychologically safer teams

Ultimately, the program achieved an impressive 95% satisfaction rating and generated meaningful discussions around real workplace challenges.

“It was a well run course that explained how to approach conversations and how to provide support.”

Thus, by equipping leaders with practical tools and confidence, organisations can build stronger support networks that positively impact both employee wellbeing and workplace culture.

3. Managing Psychosocial Risks and Creating Healthier Workplaces

Meanwhile, as psychosocial hazards become an increasing focus under Work Health and Safety legislation*, many organisations are seeking practical ways to identify, assess and manage workplace risks.

WFR recently partnered with 29Metals Golden Grove to complete a comprehensive Psychosocial Risk Assessment Desktop Review.

The review assessed key organisational elements, including:

  • Leadership practices
  • Workplace systems and processes
  • Employee support mechanisms
  • Risk management frameworks
  • Organisational culture
  • Governance practices

Using WFR’s Mental Health Maturity Model, the review provided a clear picture of existing strengths while identifying opportunities to further improve psychosocial risk management and workplace wellbeing outcomes.

Organisations receive more than just a risk assessment. They gain a roadmap for building sustainable systems that support psychological safety, reduce risk exposure, and strengthen organisational capability over time.

Client feedback highlighted the value of the process:

“It was a very professional and cost-effective process. This level of detail I would usually expect from a review that involved far longer duration and site access. It exceeded my expectations.”

4. Supporting Grant Applications and Workplace Mental Health Solutions

Many organisations recognise the importance of workplace mental health; however, they are uncertain about where to begin or how to secure funding for meaningful initiatives.

WFR bridges that gap by supporting businesses to identify grant opportunities, prepare funding applications, and design tailored workplace mental health programs that align with their operational needs and workforce challenges.

Our support may include:

  • Mental health and wellbeing strategies
  • Leadership development programs
  • Psychosocial risk management initiatives
  • Employee wellbeing frameworks
  • Workplace mental health training
  • Measurement, reporting and evaluation processes

From funding submissions through to program implementation, WFR works alongside organisations to turn ideas into practical, measurable outcomes that make a lasting difference.

Looking Ahead

Creating a mentally healthy workplace requires more than a single initiative. In essence, sustainable change comes from a combination of awareness, capable leaders, effective systems and a clear organisational strategy.

Whether through workplace mental health training, leadership development, psychosocial risk assessments or grant-funded wellbeing initiatives, organisations are increasingly recognising that investing in mental health is not just the right thing to do. Ultimately, it is essential for building safer, healthier and higher-performing workplaces.

Ultimately, at WFR, we are committed to helping organisations create environments where people feel supported, valued and empowered to perform at their best.
